Young Murdoch, the American of the story, will dispute with this strongly-marked, rough-hewn manufacturer the chief place in the reader's interest. In Rachel French appears a type of woman's character which Mrs. Burnett has not given us before, and which shows a new side of her peculiarly dramatic power.
