I loved the intro to this book and how quickly we learned of Fran’s strong, bolshy character! Jenna, whose introduction takes place two years earlier at a retreat in Gozo, is a softer, uncertain character hoping to find herself and sort her life out. Growing up, Fran and Jenna, haven’t had a great relationship with each other, nor with their parents. In Gozo, we’re also introduced to the other two main characters, Tom and Kate, who run SoulShrink, as well as a host of other characters. However, there are a lot of weird and sinister goings on, culminating in Tom being imprisoned. After his release two years later, Fran takes herself off on a SoulShrink retreat, with the hope of finding out what happened to her sister. I loved the way the book flitted between these two periods and the main characters of Fran and Jenna are gradually built up, until we learn everything we need to know about them….or do we. The book is filled with unanswered questions and remaining characters are cleverly woven into the story, each finding their place and use. There are lots of great references with regard to self help issues and many thought provoking questions throughout. This is another blockbuster of a psychological thriller from C.L. Taylor, filled with lashings of twists and turns and kept me guessing until the end. Once again I got the ending wrong, which was cleverly hidden throughout! Definitely one to reread!

The last thing you would expect when you are on a wellness retreat, is the death of two guests and the disappearance of another. But this is the case at Soul Shrink Retreats where wanting to heal yourself could just well cost you your life in this gripping psychological thriller from C.L. Taylor. I enjoyed the mystery of this tale and was by Fran’s side in her attempt in trying to find out what happened to her sister Jenna, who disappeared from the retreat without a trace. Like her family, I wanted answers and I was compelled to keep reading until I got them! What I really like the most about C.L. Taylor’s books is they are always very character driven, which is also the case with this book. I enjoyed the narrative from the points of view of three of the characters, Jenna, Fran and Kate (Tom Wade’s wife) and their uniqueness. Not all likeable, they are well developed, very well written and each bring the story to life. Her Last Holiday is a clever, slow burning tale that is full of suspense and some good twists. Yes I admit that there were some moments that were out there and beggar belief, but this did not ruin my overall enjoyment of the book. A solid psychological thriller that I found very entertaining.

HER LAST HOLIDAY by C. L. Taylor Tom Wade has just been released from prison after serving a two year sentence following the deaths of two people of one of his “Soul Shrink” retreats. Now, Fran is determined to find out what happened to her sister Jenna, who disappeared at the same time. Tom has been tight lipped about Jenna, but Fran wants the truth, and is soon attending Tom’s next retreat. Will Tom tell her the truth, and will she survive the encounter? The story switches between the retreat on the Maltese island of Gozo, mainly told from Jenna’s perspective, and Fran’s search for the truth almost three years later in North Wales. While I did eventually worked out how it would play out, it was still shocking and the explanation took me completely by surprise. And that is why a C. L. Taylor book never disappoints. Overall, I am happy to recommend to any lover of a good mystery. I have given Her Last Holiday by C. L. Taylor five stars. (dated 1 May 2021)
