In 1947 ging Bertus Aafjes naar Egypte. In achtendertig dagen schreef hij aldaar honderd-en-één sonnetten, die in Het koningsgraf zijn bijeengebracht en in 1948 voor het eerst in druk verschenen.
‘Een beeldenboom met honderd vruchten welke de smaak dragen van liefde en dood,’ schreef Karel Jonckheere over dit werk in zijn essay Bertus Aafjes, de dichter van de poëzie.
