“I guess the boys must be out,” she said.

There was no response from Matt and she expected him to stop in front of the bunkhouse. It didn’t happen though. Instead, he kept going past and drove through the open doors of the barn. They started to shut right away and Bella felt the prick of unease as she was surrounded by the gloom of the building.

“What…, what’s going on?” she stammered.

“Boys haven’t gone,” Matt said. “I called them about you and they told me they wanted to say hello.”

Mrs. Carter’s words flashed through Bella’s mind. She’d joked that her bigger chest would get her a ride and had been warned to take care it didn’t get her more. The comment seemed prophetic when she turned to see the lecherous expression on Matt’s face.

“I told the boys how good you were looking,” he went on.

Bella realized that his vault over the fence when she first laid eyes on him had nothing to do with being desperate to relieve himself. He’d obviously wanted to get out of sight, so he could make the call to his friends to set her up.

“And Cody said you were a little wildcat in bed,” Matt went on.

The name brought a flush of heat to Bella’s cheeks. She didn’t need to ask for a surname. The comment was enough for her to know it was one of the men she’d slept with during her time working for Mrs. Carter. The two ranch hands that closed the barn doors moved past the truck to join another sitting on a bale of hay. Matt opened the truck door, but a grip on his arm stopped him getting out of the truck.

“Please,” Bella said in a voice that betrayed her disquiet. “You can’t do this to me.”

“I’m offering you a ride all the way to Sandwater,” he replied and freed his arm from the grip, so he could get out. “I thought you’d be a lot nicer about it.”

She’d been tricked into coming to the ranch and now found herself in a situation that threatened to spiral out of control. It was clear she’d been brought to the place to do more than say hello.

Mrs. Carter’s warning flashed through her head again when her gaze fixed on the three men sitting on the bale of hay. She recognized Cody’s face, but not the other two. She suddenly wished she’d let her boss drive her to the bus station. That chance was gone though. A growing panic took hold when the door of the truck was yanked open.

“Please,” Bella let out again. “I’m pregnant.”

“Yeah, we heard about that,” Matt said and a lecherous expression crossed his face when he set his gaze on her chest. “It makes things all the better. The boys are hungry.”
