Pietroburgo diventa lo scenario dove si intrecciano le passioni dello scrittore: il dolore per il figlio morto, l'attrazione che prova per Anna Sergeevna - la padrona di casa di Pavel che ora ospita lui -, e persino per la giovane figlia di lei, il conseguente desiderio di rimanere in Russia ma altresí il bisogno di tornare all'esilio di Dresda...
