Pubblicato originariamente nel 1937, Il capanno sulla spiaggia ("I'll Be Judge, I'll Be Jury"), narra le vicende di Mary Dallas e del suo amante, George Needham. Una mattina presto, mentre soggiorna in un albergo con il marito John, Mary si reca a un appuntamento con l'amante in un capanno sulla spiaggia, ma, al posto di trovare l'amato, s'imbatte nel cadavere del suo ricco tutore, Hilary Stephens. All'arrivo di George, i due decidono di simulare un incidente e spostano il corpo in modo che sembri che l'uomo sia morto dopo essere scivolato e aver battuto la testa. La polizia però è meno ingenua di quello che pensano e le indagini iniziano serrate. Tutti hanno avuto l'occasione di uccidere il povero Hilary, e soprattutto tutti hanno un movente. Potrebbero avvalersi dei loro alibi ma, curiosamente, invece di aiutare sembrano confondere ancora di più le acque.
