Nel 1344 il re d 'Inghilterra Edoardo III regalava alla Contessa di Salisbury una preziosa giarrettiera, destinata a divenire, nei secoli seguenti, una storica reliquia del Museo Britannico. Quando lo giarrettiera viene rubata, inizia una complicata storia in cui, sullo sfondo di suggestivi scenari, si ripropone l'antica rivalità tra l'Arsenio Lupin americano, chiamato " il Falco", e l'astuto ispettore di polizia Meredith.Jacques Futrelle(1875-1912), americano nonostante il nome, dopo le prime esperienze di giornalismo pubblicò dei romanzi polizieschi in cui compariva un nuovo tipo di investigatore, il coltissimo Augustus Van Dusen, significativamente chiamato "la Macchina Pensante". Degno discepolo di Sherlock Holmes, Van Dusen è un vero "scienziato" dell'indagine. Futrelle, le cui opere anticipano i metodi di John Thorndyke, l'investigatore "scientifico" creato da Freeman, incontrò una prematura morte nel disastro del Titanic, nel 1912.
