Arthur Conan Doyle 1859 – 1930 Irlandese ma nato a Edimburgo, medico, abbandona il cattolicesimo per l’agnosticismo scientifico. Un giorno inventa Sherlock Holmes, l’indagatore del raziocinio, e da allora, tra romanzi e racconti (memorabili, fra gli altri, Uno studio in rosso, Il segno dei quattro, La valle della paura, Il mastino dei Baskerville), non se ne libera più. Tenterà di farlo morire ma, per la pressione dei lettori, dovrà riportarlo in vita.
