About this eBook

A rollercoaster ride from the cult master of the psycho-thriller

'A blistering portrait of contemporary Japan, its nihilism and decadence wrapped up within one of the most savage thrillers since The Silence of the Lambs' Kirkus

'Deft and fascinating . . . A grisly tour of the darkness and confusion of the human mind' New York Times

It's just before New Year, and Frank, an overweight American tourist, has hired Kenji to take him on a guided tour of Tokyo's red light district.

As Frank's behaviour becomes increasingly unsettling, Kenji begins to entertain a horrible suspicion: his client may in fact have murderous intentions.

Although Kenji is far from innocent himself, he unwillingly descends into the troubling waters of Frank's mind, from which only his sixteen-year-old girlfriend, Jun, can possibly save him.

I couldn't put this book down. I read it well into the wee hours and spent the day wondering what would happen next until I could read more. I prepared myself for a variety of outcomes and was still surprised at how it ended.

Could be a little draggy sometimes but very engaging and more story driven. Cliffhanger for sure

A great read, and while the ending did leave me a bit in the 'there must be more' mood, couldn't picture any ending quite as fitting.

About the author

On a recent trip to Britain, bestselling author Haruki Murakami was asked who his favourite Japanese author was. He replied that it was his namesake, Ryu Murakami. Renaissance man for the postmodern age, Ryu Murakami has played drums for a rock group, made movies and hosted a TV talk show. Whilst he was still a student, his first novel Almost Transparent Blue was awarded Japan's most coveted literary prize and went on to sell over a million copies.

Ralph McCarthy is the translator of 69 by Ryu Murakami and two collections of stories by Osamu Dazai.
