Introduction to Supercritical Fluids: A Spreadsheet-Based Approach Second Edition provides an accessible overview of elementary supercritical fluid processes (including extraction, particle formation, heat exchangers, phase equilibrium, chemical reaction equilibrium) supported by easy-to-use Excel spreadsheets suitable for both specialized-discipline (chemistry or chemical engineering student) and mixed-discipline (engineering/economic student) classes. Each chapter contains worked examples, tip boxes and end-of-the-chapter problems and projects. Part I covers web-based chemical information resources, applications and simplified theory presented in a way that allows students of all disciplines to delve into the properties of supercritical fluids and to design energy, extraction and materials formation systems for real-world processes that use supercritical water or supercritical carbon dioxide. P Part II takes a practical approach and addresses the thermodynamic framework, equations of state, fluid phase equilibria, heat and mass transfer (newly added), chemical equilibria and also reaction kinetics (newly added) of supercritical fluids. Spreadsheets are arranged as Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) functions and macros that are completely (source code) accessible for students who have interest in developing their own programs. Programming is not required to solve problems or to complete projects in the text. Introduction to Supercritical Fluids, Second Edition is written primarily for graduate students and researchers in chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science. - Provides an overview of elementary supercritical fluid processes (extraction, particle formation, heat exchangers, phase equilibrium, chemical reaction equilibrium) - Each chapter contains practical activities with worked examples, tip boxes and end-of-the-chapter problems and projects for the reader - Contains new and updated worked examples suitable for both introductory and advanced level students and fully updated Excel VBA Worksheet functions that can be used "as-is" to perform "hands-on" calculations, simulations and analyses of supercritical fluid processes and allow users to design their own processes - Includes helpful teaching aids that will simplify instruction of both introductory level students and advanced students about the merits and applications of supercritical fluids - Fluid phase equilibria and chemical equilibria worksheets allow users to change conditions, study new solutes, co-solvents, chemical systems, or reactions New to this edition: - New chapters on mass transfer, reaction kinetics and advanced topics with all previous chapters being fully updated

Richard Lee Smith, Jr. received his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, in 1985. He is Professor in the Graduate School of Environmental Studies at Tohoku University, Japan since 2002 and Asia Regional Editor of The Journal of Supercritical Fluids; having also authored more than 250 scientific papers and publications related to properties, reactions, separations, and material processing with supercritical fluids.Hiroshi Inomata received his Doctor of Engineering from Tohoku University in 1986. He is former Director of the Research Center of Supercritical Fluid Technology and Professor at Tohoku University, Japan. He is the author of more than 250 scientific papers related to thermodynamics, phase equilibria and molecular simulation of supercritical fluids.Cor J. Peters holds affiliate Distinguished Professorships in Chemical Engineering at both Colorado School of Mines and the University of Maryland, USA. Prior to his current positions, he was chairman of the Chemical Engineering Department at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, currently Khalifa University of Science and Technology. Simultaneously to this position, he was the Director of the Gas Research Center. In academic education, he has taught a variety of courses, e.g.: Thermodynamics, Advanced Thermodynamics, Applied Thermodynamics, Natural Gas Processing, Statistical Thermodynamics, Phase Equilibria and Physical Chemistry. His research expertise covers fields like complex phase equilibria, with main applications on natural gas and gas-condensates. Furthermore, ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, hydrogen storage, gas hydrates, supercritical fluid technology, desalination and CO2-sequestration belong to his scientific interest. Dr Peters is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
