Strange creatures come down from the mountains, slaughtering villagers. Spirits of the dead haunt the land, terrifying those that are still alive. As rumors spread about the Stanesโ involvement, Danr decides to find out the truth, taking Aisa and an amnesiac new friend with him. Soon they are called up by Death herself to set things right.
At Deathโs request, the group sets out to recover the Iron Axe. Crafted by the dwarves, it is capable of restoring balance in the worldโand destroying it, too. Along the way, Danr must call upon the monster within to face fierce and fantastic creatures while discovering truths that will change their lives forever.

Steven Harper Piziks, writing as Steven Harper, sold his first short story in 1990 and has been writing ever since. Harper has written over fifty stories and twenty novels, including The Silent Empire series, The Clockwork Empire series, The Books of Blood and Iron series, and โEight Mile and the City,โ the 2022 winner of the Washington Science Fiction Association Small Press Short Fiction Award. He has also written movie novelizations and books based on Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and The Blacklist. Harper teaches English in southeast Michigan, where he lives with his husband.
