La vicenda narrata in questo racconto lungo si svolge in treno, nell’arco di un viaggio da Milano a Trieste. Il protagonista, il signor Aghios, rientra a pieno titolo nella categoria degli inetti tipici nella letteratura di Svevo. È un uomo diviso tra l’aspirazione alla libertà e la necessità di avere sotto controllo la realtà che lo circonda. E, vittima di queste pulsioni contrastanti, finirà per essere beffato e nello stesso tempo artefice della beffa di cui è vittima... Aron Hector Schmitz (1861-1928) nasce a Trieste da un’altolocata famiglia della borghesia ebraica. Sebbene italofono, la sua formazione sarà impartita rigorosamente in tedesco, fattore che influenzerà notevolmente il suo stile di scrittura. Tale humus culturale – tipicamente mitteleuropeo – lo mette precocemente in contatto con temi che poi si ritroveranno anche nella sua produzione, come ad esempio la psicanalisi di Freud. Oltre ad essere stato un prolifico autore di racconti, Svevo è ricordato soprattutto per i suoi romanzi: "Una vita", "Senilità" e, soprattutto, "La coscienza di Zeno".
