Dans un village de l'Ukraine occidentale, en 1870, pour des questions d'héritage, les frères d'Anna lui font croire que son amant, Mykhaïlo, est mort à la guerre. Or, ce dernier est toujours vivant ! Devenu gendarme, il revient au village pour retrouver sa promise. Usant de son pouvoir, le gendarme accuse le mari, Mykola, un vieux paysan, d'assassinat et l'envoie en prison. Faute de preuves, le mari est libéré et rentre chez lui. Anna est alors tiraillée entre son coeur et sa raison. Une traduction d'un des chefs d'oeuvre de la dramaturgie ukrainienne du XIXème siècle.
