About this ebook

The start of a swoony, high-energy duology that Emily Lloyd-Jones, author of The Bone Houses, calls “reminiscent of classic fairytales yet brimming with a charm all its own.”

“A world of glimmering fae that sparkles with mystery, adventure, and enchantment.” —Andrew Joseph White, New York Times bestselling author of Hell Followed with Us

Iselia “Seelie” Graygrove looks just like her twin, Isolde…but as an autistic changeling left in the human world by the fae as an infant, she has always known she is different. Seelie’s unpredictable magic makes it hard for her to fit in—and draws her and Isolde into the hunt for a fabled treasure. In a heist gone wrong, the sisters make some unexpected allies and find themselves unraveling a mystery that has its roots in the history of humans and fae alike.

Both sisters soon discover that the secrets of the faeries may be more valuable than any pile of gold and jewels. But can Seelie harness her magic in time to protect her sister and herself?

“Housman’s stunning debut is the sort of love letter only an autistic author could write. Fae canon has been waiting for this one.” —H.E. Edgmon, author of The Witch King

Before I start my review, I want to state that I feel that it's very important that you read the author's notes in this book. It sheds some light on this book in ways I couldn't tell you. It also gives a glimpse of who she is as a person. That said, I want to start by saying that I'm so in love with this cover. I can't remember how I came across the book. I can say that I'm glad I did. The story was amazing. I connected so well with Seelie. I have ADHD. Seelie is autistic. (More in blog)

This book grabbed me from the very beginning and never let go. I loved traveling with Seelie and Isolde as they journeyed with former rivals Olani and Raze to find answers and possibly ancient treasure that holds promises of a brighter future. The first person point of view told through Seelie felt vivid and authentic. I enjoyed how I got to live through her eyes--eyes of an autistic person. I've read books for younger readers with autistic characters, but this the first time I can say I have a

I especially enjoyed reading about Iselia and her journeys. I like her as a character and I felt that her emotions were well portrayed/expressed in the book. Some other characters were not my favorite when I first met them, but they grew on me as I could see their character develop and grow. The plot of the book was interesting and there was not a moment where it seemed boring or slow. It was a little hard to get into the book at the beginning, once I started, I didn't want to put the book down.

About the author

Ivelisse Housman is a Puerto Rican-American author and illustrator. At all seven schools she attended throughout her childhood, she was infamously “that kid who gets in trouble for reading during class, but refuses to stop.” She was diagnosed with autism at 15, which made everything make a lot more sense. When she isn't writing, she can be found making soup or tending to her houseplants. She lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains with her high school sweetheart/archnemesis and their two rescue dogs.
