About this ebook

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils. . . Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

A big novel about a small town, THE CASUAL VACANCY is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

It's just boring. Of no real literary or entertainment value. It's not worth the time to read it. If you are here because you loved Harry Potter, don't bother with this story of small village pettiness and squabbling.

This was well written, good escapism with a very large cast of mostly well drawn characters. It captured a certain type of provincial town where petty rivalries and gossip are the daily currency. Although amusing in places, it was generally quite bleak in its outlook. My only complaint is that I felt that the ending was rather rushed and I felt like a few of the characters got away from the writer and the reader in the end.

A book about life of a small British town with all its jealousy, gossips, bribery, shallow people etc. - neither a detective nor a mystery of any kind, just a pure narrative. A lot of intertwining stories tell us about lives of those mediocre people with their mediocre problems. J.K.Rowling's manner of introducing characters and building their personalities is very vivid in this book. I personally was fascinated by one of the key characters - a teenage girl, daughter of a grug adict. Really enjoyed the book
