La novela se tituló en principio Jane Eyre: una autobiografía y se publicó bajo el pseudónimo de Currer Bell. Tuvo un éxito inmediato, tanto para los lectores como para la crítica. Uno de sus más acérrimos defensores fue el escritor William Makepeace Thackeray, al cual muchos atribuyeron la obra, pues la autora permaneció en el anonimato hasta un tiempo después de su publicación. Como agradecimiento, Charlotte le dedicó la segunda edición. Esta novela es considerada una de las primeras obras feministas de la literatura inglesa.
