Elsi e Mareili, le protagoniste dei due racconti che compongono questo libro, sono assai diverse fra loro, ma accomunate da una segreta aristocrazia dell’anima. Nella prosa di Gotthelf, che fu anzitutto un grande scrittore epico, rappresentano quel timbro evocativo che in essa si nasconde e la fa vibrare. Elsi è una figura tragica, uno scudo purissimo opposto al fato avverso. Mareili è invece immersa in una natura amorevole, dove intesse lentamente la sua vita. Entrambe sfuggono ai canoni comuni della psicologia, tanto più di quella ottocentesca. E ci vengono incontro, dal fondo della Svizzera più chiusa, come due «korai» arcaiche, dall’espressione ferma, non toccata dal tempo. «Elsi, la strana serva» fu pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1843, «Mareili delle fragole» nel 1851.
