Judy Backhouse writes optimistic future fiction to create hopeful stories about how the human race could end up being better, but also to give her imagination a space to play, free from the straight-jacket of rational thinking. She keeps a fiction blog where she posts vignettes and snippets about her work in progress. In 2022 she had a (very) short story “Algorithmed out” published by Vine Leaves Press. Wearing her straight-jacket, Judy has authored more than fifty academic articles in journals, edited books and conference proceedings. She has also written a non-fiction book “Is a PhD for me?” aimed to help professionals to understand what graduate study is really like. For many years she ran writing workshops for academics and graduate students, to convince them that research writing could actually be fun. In her professional life, Judy has been a Mathematician, an Information Systems architect, a senior manager in the corporate world, advisor to a Minister of Higher Education and the Head of a School of Economic and Business Sciences at a South African university. Her current day job at the United Nations University involves researching how technologies can improve governance. Judy is a playful South African who currently lives in Portugal. https://judybackhouse.com/fiction
