About this ebook

BOOK 3 IN THE GRIPPING SUPERNATURAL SERIES BY THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE CHRONICLES OF ST MARY'S

I don't know who I am. I don't know what I am.

The identity of Elizabeth Cage has always been a mystery. Even she doesn't know who, or what, she is. But she's learned to live with it.

Until now, when what should have been a peaceful holiday turns into anything but, and Elizabeth is forced to recognise that she isn't what she seems.

But neither is anyone else. Has her whole life been a lie?

Someone very badly wants to know the truth about Elizabeth Cage. And they'll do anything to find out. But who will live to regret it?

Twisty, dark and incredibly gripping, the Elizabeth Cage novels are perfect for fans of Sarah Painter and Genevieve Cogman.

Readers love Jodi Taylor:

'Jodi Taylor does brilliant, strong female heroes, and Elizabeth follows on from Max in the St Mary's series'

'I look forward to another adventure with this quirky and perfectly matched pair'

'Hold on to your seat and close your eyes if you dare!'

'Gripping and full of curious plot turns'

'An on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller where no assumptions can be made'

Number three in the Elizabeth Cage series with White Silence (book 1) and Dark Light (book 2) and as good as the first two books, which I also rated a 5. Whilst you can read each as a stand alone, they are more enjoyable and you understand the funny references better if you read all three in the order they have been written. Jodi Taylor is a delight as an author, someone whom I found six months ago and I have now read all of her Chronicles of St Mary books (time travel and history with a lot of funny bits) and Frogmorton Farm ( sort of adult fantasy/magic fiction stories - but don't let that put off, it is a great series). I would rate Jodi Taylor in one of my top 10 authors to go to now. I read voraciously, so to find a new author that has a great imagination, writes interesting and unusual books and has a huge sense of humour, which she brings to her stories is wonderful. And her characters are strong and not wishy washy. I hate simpering, stupid females and stereotyped genders, which she does not do. Highly recommended.

Where on earth to start? First off, DO NOT start the series with this book, it is complicated enough for those of us who have read the preceding books, for a new reader I think it would be almost impossible. Elizabeth Cage was a very boring, ordinary, housewife, married to the head of security for a local research facility. But she has a secret, she can see people's auras (or colours as she describes it) and that can give her insights into people's emotions and whether they are lying. After her husband's death, Elizabeth is pursued by the sinister head of research, Sorenson. Elizabeth thinks she has found some form of equilibrium/ mutually assured destruction with Sorenson so she and Michael Jones (a shadowy MI5-type character) take a long-overdue holiday in Scotland. Unfortunately, despite their best plans, Elizabeth's 'gift' leads them into conflict almost immediately. Someone else has said they couldn't describe the plot because 'spoilers'. Suffice it to say this book contains: a hunky secret agent type with witty repartee, a huge sword, a smelly dog, Christmas, several ghosts, ancient gods, demons, murders, kidnapping, and a date. And of course, long dark shadows. It was mad, gripping, funny, scary, and sweet all at once. Loved it.

About the author

LOSE TRACK OF TIME IN THE WORLD OF JODI TAYLOR Jodi Taylor is the internationally bestselling author of over twenty-five novels and more short stories that you can shake a stick at. Her Chronicles of St Mary's series follows a bunch of disaster-prone individuals who investigate major historical events in contemporary time. Do NOT call it time travel! She is also the author of the Time Police books. Set in the same world as St Mary's, this spinoff charts the highs and lows of an all-powerful, international organisation tasked with keeping the Timeline straight no matter what the cost. Efficient and disciplined, obviously they're nothing like St Mary's. Except when they are. In 2024, The Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal accidentally grew from a short story to a full-length novel, revealing the origin story of two beloved characters who feature in both series. Jodi is also known for her gripping supernatural thrillers featuring the mysterious Elizabeth Cage together with the enchanting Frogmorton Farm series - a fairy story for adults. Born in Bristol and now living in Gloucester (facts both cities vigorously deny), she spent many years with her head somewhere else, much to the dismay of family, teachers and employers, before finally deciding to put all that daydreaming to good use and write a book.
