About the author

James Baldwin, romancier, essayiste et dramaturge américain, est né à Harlem en 1924. En 1948, il quitte New York pour la France et la Suisse où il écrit son premier roman, La Conversion (1953). La Chambre de Giovanni, La Prochaine Fois, Le Feu, Harlem Quartet et Chronique d'un pays natal figurent parmi ses œuvres majeures. Dans les années 1960, Baldwin est très engagé dans le mouvement des droits civiques aux États-Unis. La décennie suivante, il s’installe en France, à Saint-Paul-de-Vence, où il meurt en 1987.
