The country is changing and, up and down the land, cracks are appearing - within families and between generations.

In the Midlands Benjamin Trotter is trying to help his aged father navigate a Britain that seems to have forgotten he exists, whilst in London his friend Doug doesn't understand why his teenage daughter is eternally enraged. Meanwhile, newlyweds Sophie and Ian can find nothing to agree on except the fact that their marriage is on the rocks . . .

A hilarious follow-up to The Rotters' Club and Closed Circle, Jonathan Coe captures the state of our nation once again!

This was such a boring read. Too many characters & characters that were unbelievable, shoe horned in to give comic relief (but it's not a funny book either). A ticklist of recent current affairs described but of course if you keep up with current affairs you know this stuff anyway. A whole chapter dedicated to describing the Olympic games opening ceremony. It didn't offer anything interesting or funny or insightful. Just dull.

Middle England is the third in Jonathan Coe's Rotters' Club series- The Rotters' Club, The Closed Circle and now Middle England. Having started during the 1970s, continued with the Millennium, Mr Coe now turns his attentions and those of his older, but not necessarily wiser, characters to BREXIT. As usual Jonathan Coe has produced an amusing novel but, I don't feel that this is one of his best. Don't get me wrong, as Jonathan Coe is a very talented author, what is 'not one of his best' (in my opinion) still makes it well worth reading!

An excellent post-referendum state of the nation novel. Reader beware though, this is not a balanced summary of the last 10 years of English history, your appreciation will largly depend on where you stand on the whole Brexit debate, but, in my opinion it sums things up pretty accurately.
