"Destra e sinistra" (1929) appartiene al periodo in cui Roth più profondamente si calò, fino quasi a perdervisi, nella turbolenta, torbida realtà sociale della Repubblica di Weimar. Allora corteggiò molte «ombre sorte e formate dalle nebbie dell’epoca», anch’egli ombra fra le ombre, ma dotato di una chiaroveggenza che gli permetteva di dare una forma, nel momento stesso in cui si mostrava, all’emergere di una nuova realtà scomposta e venefica. Così questo romanzo è esempio perfetto di narrazione a caldo, dove diventano fantasmi narrativi quei personaggi estremi, accaparratori, terroristi, borghesi in crisi, cospiratori, sbandati, falliti, che fiorirono nella Germania pre-nazista. Su questo sfondo spicca uno dei personaggi più sorprendenti di Roth: quello del «mongolo»-ebreo Nikolaj Brandeis che conquista tutto quel che può nell’Occidente disfatto e poi lo abbandona, sparendo «nel mare dell’ignoto».
