This is an inspirational story about tragic existence. As in The Kite Runner, I learned so much about daily life for so many Afghans. The cultural difference, it would seem, between life in Afghanistan and life in the west is at best a huge gulf, almost uncrossable but thanks Khaled Hosseini it has been somewhat bridged. Albeit by a rickety rope bridge but nevertheless, a croosing. One that has given me at least a small yet significantly better understanding of the struggles of the average Kabuli in general and women in particular.

Joshua Becker and his young family live in Peoria, AZ. In many ways, they are just your typical middle-class, suburban family--minus the dog and relentless pursuit of physical possessions. After a conversation with their neighbor on Memorial Day 2008, Joshua and his family decided to pursue a more minimalist lifestyle. Consequently, they decided to remove their nonessential possessions. Eventually, over 70% of their belongings were sold, donated, or discarded. In exchange for owning less, they found a life of more freedom, more contentment, more generosity, and more opportunity to pursue the things that mattered most.
