About this ebook

From the winner of the 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction comes a novel of profound insight and comic flare.

Shy, sensible banker Stuart has trouble with women; that is, until a fortuitous singles night, where he meets Gillian, a picture restorer recovering from a destructive affair. Stuart's best friend Oliver is his complete opposite - a language teacher who 'talks like a dictionary', brash and feckless. Soon Stuart and Gillian are married, but it is not long before a tentative friendship between the three evolves into something far different.

Talking it Over is a brilliant and intimate account of love's vicissitudes. It begins as a comedy of errors, then slowly darkens and deepens, drawing us compellingly into the quagmires of the heart.

The thing about this book that will hook you is the plot. Give it a couple of absorbing chapters where you build up a picture of three characters (or perhaps caricatures is better), and you'll be drawn in. Then it's almost irresistible; the interplay, the differences of opinion between the characters, the explanations of meaning and reason and the insights into complex human relationships are a great mix. The narrative device of three characters (plus a few extra) giving their differing points of view on events is an interesting way of doing things. The portrayal of Oliver always seems too over-the-top, though, and his eccentricities extreme. You are probably not meant to like him, but I feel that Barnes over did it on the self-indulgence. Worth a read!
