I «Juvenilia» sono le opere scritte da Jane Austen adolescente, dal 1787 al 1793 e corrette anche in seguito fino alla vigilia della pubblicazione di «Sense and Sensibility» (1811). Il timore che la singolarità e la tagliente ironia di questi scritti giovanili potessero nuocere all'immagine della scrittrice impedì la loro diffusione per lungo tempo. I ventisette brani sono raccolti in tre quaderni manoscritti, intitolati dall'autrice come si soleva fare coi volumi dei romanzi contemporanei (Volume the First, Volume the Second, Volume the Third). Si tratta di materiale eterogeneo, sia per quanto concerne la lunghezza che il genere: troviamo frammenti, romanzi brevi, romanzi epistolari, pezzi teatrali, versi e perfino un saggio storico. All'indomani delle prime novecentesche pubblicazioni, Virginia Woolf espresse sorpresa ed ammirazione per questi scritti giovanili, ma fu G. K. Chesterton il primo ad annoverare Jane Austen nella tradizione dell'eccentrico, del burlesque e della parodia, accanto ad autori come Chaucer, Defoe, Swift, Fielding, Sterne, Butler.
