About this ebook

 Knowledge of weed biology is essential for development of both economically and environmentally acceptable weed management systems. With this background only, the book on “Weed Seed Biology” has been prepared. This book is a documentation of botany and seed biology of 42 dryland, 32 gardenland and 21 wetland weed species.

The book consists of three major parts namely Part I: Seed biology of dryland weeds, Part II: Seed biology of gardenland weeds and Part III: Seed biology of wetland weeds. Each chapter deals with origin and distribution, habitat and habit, reproductive biology, flowering, pollination and fruit set, propagation and seed dispersal, lifecycle, seed dormancy and germination, and seed storage and burial. Besides, the past work done on weed Seed Science and Technology is also compiled by reviewing many literatures. It’s effects on crop production, control measures and uses are also included in each chapter.

The book on “Weed Seed biology” is highly useful to the students, teachers and scientists specializing in weed seed science.

About the author

K. Vanangamudi

Dr. K. Vanangamudi, Professor (Seed Science and Technology),Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He is a Co-principal Investigator for various ICAR NAIP scheme on ‘Development of e-course materials for B.Sc (Ag) degree programme’, Principle Investigator of GOI schemes NIMI on ‘Development of instructional materials for ITI students in agriculture sector’ and ‘Development of instructional materials for COE both BBBT and advance modules’. He was the former Dean (Agri), Agricultural College and Research Institute, TNAU, Coimbatore (March 2006 – July 2009), former Dean of AP, Agricultural College, TNAU, Kalavai, Vellore (September 2003 – February 2006), and former Professor and Head of Dept. of Seed Science and Technology, TNAU, CBE 3 (March 2001 – August 2003). As Dean (Agri) he started three new UG degree programmes: B.Tech in Bioinformatics (2006–2007), B.Tech in Agricultural Information Technology (2006–2008) and B.S in Agribusiness Management (2007–2008). As a faculty Dean of TNAU, Dr. Vanangamudi is possessed with a substantial experience in e-education and therefore he introduced e-learning, e-teaching, e-class, e-registration, e-attendance, e-communication, e-assignment, online examination and e-evaluation for the UG degree programme. This is implemented in 12 UG degrees being offered at 10 constituent and four affiliated colleges.

M. Bhaskaran

Dr. M. Bhaskaran, Ph.D., is now positioned as Special Officer (Seeds), Seed Centre, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. He is also holding the additional charge of Professor and Head, Dept. of Seed Science & Technology, TNAU, Coimbatore, since 01.06.2011. He obtained Ph.D. in Seed Science and Technology from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in 1995. He is having 21 years of experience in seed planning, production and quality control, teaching, research, extension and administration. He established and operationalised National Seed Research & Training Centre & Central Seed testing laboratory with all infrastructures as founder Director and obtained ISTA member laboratory status. He was the Principal Investigator of three schemes funded by Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Neyveli Lignite Corporation under Ministry of Coal & Mines (GOI). He is a member in central Seed Committee and Central Sub Committee on variety release and Notification, GOI, technical expert for SAARC project of Ministry of External Affairs on Seed Quality Regulation aspects, technical expert for OECD Seed Schemes of Government of India and member in Research Advisory Council of Directorate of Seed Research of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). He was awarded with R.V. Swaminathan best Ph.D. scholar award (1995), TNAU best Teacher Award (2003) and MASU award on book writing in English for the book entitled, “Principles of seed production and quality control” (2003). He has published 25 research papers and one textbook “Principles of seed production and quality control”. He has visited Brazil, Italy, USA, France, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, South Africa and New Zealand in connection with seed science research and seed testing.

S. Balavidhya

Ms. S. Balavidhya has completed B.Sc. (Horti) during 2007 and M.Sc. (Ag.) majoring in Horticulture during 2009 from faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar, Tamil Nadu. For her thesis, she worked on “Studies of micropropagation of Rose” under the guidance of Dr. Arumugam Shakila. She has received “Vallalar Endowment Award” for the year of 2003-2007 and she is an awarder of “Srilochani Varadharajalu Endowment” for the topper in her MSc. She is now working as Senior Research Fellow in (GOI) NIMI scheme “Development of Instructional materials for COE both BBBT & advance modules”. She has published two research papers in Asian Journal of Horticulture 2010 and a review paper on “Seed Biopriming” in Agrobios Research Journal in 2012.

P. Murali Arthanari

Dr. P.Murali Arthanari, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) graduated from Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, obtained post graduate and doctoral degree in Agronomy from Coimbatore campus of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, excelling in all the courses of study. He is currently working at Directorate of Weed Science Research Centre, Department of Agronomy, TNAU, Coimbatore and handling research projects on weed management in field crops and involving UG and PG teaching on weed science. He has to his credit more than 35 research publications in National and International journals. He is recipient of international award on food security, T. Kondareddy award for outstanding research in Agronomy and young scientist award from ISEP, Gorakhpur.
