Acting as a form of bridge between Gears of War 1 and 2, Aspho Fields' main
storyline (each of Karen Traviss' Gears books tells 2 stories, one
contemporaneous and one historical) concerns the Locust Horde's activities
after the Lightmass Bombing, as seen in the closing cutscene of the first
game. The historical storyline tells of the boyhood bond between Marcus
Fenix and Dom Santiago (and his older brother Carlos, who never appeared in
the games), and how the three of them participated in a spec op -
"Operation Leveller" - which nabbed the Hammer of Dawn technology for the
COG. This, and Traviss' other Gears of War novels are an essential part of
the story, and if you're a Gears fan who hasn't read them, you really,
REALLY should.

Gears of War and no other description needed, but it illuminates the reason for the depth of Marcus and his loyalty and friendship to Dom. It also provides insight into the character of Cole and Baird which was non-existant in the Game. Definately worth the read if you are a lover of the game
