On 19 February 2013 the Irish Taoiseach Edna Kenny apologized to the women who had been incarcerated in Ireland's Magdalene laundries. And, in the audience, listening patiently for the words she'd been fighting to hear was Kathleen Legg.?
For Kathleen was only 14 years old when she was confined at St Mary's Stanhope Street School in 1949. The harrowing physical and psychological abuse she endured in the institutions, run on behalf of the State, led to a lifetime of shame and secrecy.??

About the author
Kathleen Legg, 78, lives in Bournemouth, England. A widow, she has two grown-up children. Aged 14, Kathleen spent three years in St Mary's Stanhope Street, run by the Sisters of Mercy. Officially a training school, it was actually a Magdalene laundry.
