In der derzeitigen politischen Theorie wird dies unter dem Begriff der Politik der Identität oder Differenz diskutiert. Eine globale Integration findet statt, jedoch mit der Folge, dass es zu Gegenbewegungen von politischer Wirkung kommt. Es entstehen neue Formen kollektiver Identität. Dabei handelt es sich um von Identität und Differenz bestimmte neue politische Bewegungen. Es wird die Frage aufgestellt, wie im Zeitalter der Globalisierung demokratische Identitäten gestaltet sein müssten.
