Figura centrale alla quale si attribuisce la nascita del movimento protestante è l'ex-frate agostiniano Martin Lutero, insieme ad altre figure di spicco quali Giovanni Calvino, Huldrych Zwingli, Thomas Müntzer e Filippo Melantone.
