Fra tutti i romanzi di Joseph Roth, "La ribellione" (1924) è forse il più aspro e sconsolato. Siamo qui immersi nell’atmosfera torbida degli anni di Weimar. Andreas Pum, il protagonista, è un mutilato di guerra che ancora crede nell’ordine del mondo e degli uomini e sogna di gestire una rivendita di francobolli. Ma la sorte, dietro cui si maschera l’oppressione senza scampo esercitata dalla società, lo trasforma a poco a poco in un capro espiatorio, in un Giobbe inerme, costretto a riconoscere l’onnipresenza del male. È questo un estremo delle oscillazioni di Roth, al cui altro capo troveremo, alla fine, l’aura di grazia sovrana che investe "La leggenda del santo bevitore". Ma i due estremi sono compresenti in tutta la sua opera, e ciascuno dà la forza all’altro.
