Questo libro non è l’ennesima guida piena di precetti su come impostare la trama, sviluppare i personaggi, creare empatia. Qui non si danno norme, tantomeno si promettono scorciatoie per scrivere bene. Vanni Santoni è molto onesto con il lettore, ovvero con l’aspirante scrittore a cui è destinato questo pamphlet acuto e affettuoso: la scrittura non si insegna. E «il motivo è uno, semplice e perentorio: la vastità infinita delle possibilità di un testo narrativo implica che infinite cose si possano scrivere in infiniti modi». Non esistono regole assolute. La grande letteratura non è una sequenza di mosse che si susseguono in maniera predeterminata per ottenere un effetto, non è un freddo algoritmo, ma un campo di possibilità, tensioni e persino contraddizioni.
