Nella Sonata a Kreutzer, Tolstoj compone il tema dell'amore e del matrimonio, che allora lo inquietava anche come momento della sua propria vita privata, nelle forme di una narrazione in cui la voce amara del protagonista si fa nitida rappresentazione drammatica. Come per l'arte, la riflessione sull'amore in Tolstoj acquistava l'urgenza e l'impeto dalla messa in questione di un'esperienza troppo veementemente vissuta per risolversi in un'analisi equilibrata e moderata: solo chi aveva sentito la forza libidinosa della carne e il prezzo della sua momentanea sazietà poteva giungere a un cosí disperato verdetto sull'amore coniugale ed extraconiugale.
