About this ebook

DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE is a book unbounded by genre but located at a magical crossroads where THE PASSAGE meets PHILIP PULLMAN and TWILIGHT meets PAN'S LABYRINTH.

Errand requiring immediate attention. Come.

The note was on vellum, pierced by the talons of the almost-crow that delivered it. Karou read the message. 'He never says please', she sighed, but she gathered up her things.

When Brimstone called, she always came.

In general, Karou has managed to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she's a seventeen-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to a monstrous creature who is the closest thing she has to family. Raised half in our world, half in 'Elsewhere', she has never understood Brimstone's dark work - buying teeth from hunters and murderers - nor how she came into his keeping. She is a secret even to herself, plagued by the sensation that she isn't whole.

Now the doors to Elsewhere are closing, and Karou must choose between the safety of her human life and the dangers of a war-ravaged world that may hold the answers she has always sought.

'Remarkable and beautifully written . . . The opening volume of a truly original trilogy.' GUARDIAN

I don't usually read this genre but thought I'd try a change. I was soon immersed into other worlds, the descriptions of which are so well depicted that you can imagine the settings and picture yourself there. The storyline is good and 'snowballs' in interest as it goes on, revealing answers to questions that I was asking myself throughout. It is beautifully written and I found the last third of the book particularly gripping. I now MUST read the 2nd book in this trilogy to see where the story goes next!

I jumped on this band wagon very late in the game. I think I was put off by the fact that the blurb makes them seem very YA romance and I vaguely remember an edorsement by Stephanie Meyer whose writing I am not a fan of. However, my assumptions were completely wrong and I wish I had read them sooner purely for the fact that I would have had more opportunities to reread them! The characters are incredible, the settings completely amazing and the relationship between the main characters is just beautiful.

I fell in love with this book and I fell in love with Akiva. Plain and simply said, it is incredible. After starting reading early one morning, I found myself litterally unable to put it down... At the end of every chapter I just wanted more. (Spoiler alert!) I will say that I was a little dissapointed to find that Karou is Madrigal but nevertheless, it is a beautifully written book :)

About the author

Hi! I write fantasy books. My latest is STRANGE THE DREAMER, about a young librarian, a mythic lost city, and the half-human children of murdered gods. Check it out :-) Before that I wrote the DAUGHTER OF SMOKE & BONE trilogy, which has been translated into 32 languages. It's about a blue-haired art student raised by monsters, a broken angel, and a war that has raged for 1000 years in another world. I also wrote LIPS TOUCH: THREE TIMES, which was a National Book Award finalist, and the DREAMDARK books. As well as various short stories and novellas.

Thanks for reading!!
