Anat is back in Karnak after Seth’s defeat but all is not forgiven. She can tell the other gods do not like or trust her so she accepts Ma’at’s mission to restore some ancient artifacts as a way to prove herself. Ma’at sends Haurun with her. His attitude leaves no doubt about his dislike and distrust. To succeed Anat will need to overcome that. It won’t be easy. This is an enjoyable read. I like Anat’s animal form and her ability to speak to snakes. The story has action, romance, and magic.

If our heroine wishes to regain her place, then she is going to need do something to earn it. But that is going to be hard to do with our hero staring over her shoulder as he is a distraction in more ways than one. This is book eight in the series. It works just fine as a standalone. This is a fantasy romance story set in the time of Egyptian gods. The story is well written and easy to read, with a straightforward plot that still manages to have some unexpected twists to it. I had so much fun with this book. Anat’s story is a little bit ‘enemies to lovers’ and a whole lot of “Relic Hunter”. It made my chest pinch over how hard Anat had to keep proving herself, her skills and her loyalty to Haurun, but I think the connection that came out of that will prove to be stronger and more enduring than it might have otherwise been.
