About this ebook

The bloodiest battle in American history is under way . . .

It's 1863, and Thomas and his little sister, Birdie, have fled the farm where they were born and raised as slaves. Following the North Star, looking for freedom, they soon cross paths with a Union soldier. Everything changes: Corporal Henry Green brings Thomas and Birdie back to his regiment, and suddenly it feels like they've found a new home. Best of all, they don't have to find their way north alone--they're marching with the army. But then orders come through: The men are called to battle in Pennsylvania. Thomas has made it so far . . . but does he have what it takes to survive Gettysburg?

Being a history buff, especially on the civil war, I was thrilled my 10 year old found this and couldn't put it down til it was finished. Perfect introduction to the future historian about some of America's darkest years. For myself, I found it entertaining, missing some pieces of battle, but enough details for the age group it's marketed for. We've read all the books in the series, and to date have not been disappointed in any of them. I hope the author continues writing these (fictional, yet fact filled books) Personally I adore the fact that they are written from a child/teen's viewpoint, it draws in the kids faster than a any history book from school.
