About this ebook

THE PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING BESTSELLER, NOW AN ACCLAIMED TV SERIES

This is the definitive account of the run-up to 9/11: from the man who lit the spark of radical Islam in 1948, to those who built up a terror network, and to the FBI agent whose warnings of 'something big' coming were ignored until the Twin Towers fell.

'The Looming Tower is a thriller. And it's a tragedy, too' The New York Times

'The most detailed (and thrilling) account we have of the events that led to the destruction of the Twin Towers' Observer, Books of the Year

'Possibly the best book yet written on the rise of al-Qaeda ... beautifully written and wonderfully compelling' William Dalrymple

'We meet some formidable schemers and killers ... fabulists crazed with blood and death' Martin Amis

After reading this book, I have realised how and why highly educated and intelligent people too get radicalised. First, these people have been exposed to their religion at very early ages by their parents. Second, they believe everything that are written in and about their prophets and holy books are gospels and (have to) accept them without questioning. Third, their religion binds them so tight, and are in a blind alley with Jannat and jihad alone as their guides; nor can they question what represents morality and whether the morality of their prophet is different from theirs. And finally, they have no concept of a true self to look into. Plato said "an unexamined life is a wasted life", Buddha taught the world why and what causes human sufferings and how to free oneself from its bonds. Religion, for most of us provide an illusory relief from our self-made sufferings, esp. in our latter years when we attribute special meanings to it and follow the dictates of the religious fanatics, thinking they must have mòre knowledge and experience on such matters, however illogical they may in reality be. Thus, religion becomes a viscious cycle and an opiate for these gullibles. They condemn science, democracy, materialism and other modern concepts on which the modern civilized world revolve around. They fail to understand the world and the universe represent material world and even our body is no exception to it Inner and outer realities together make our lives livable. They proclaim repeatedly, that their religion is peaceful one' and their women are treated with respect. Yet they cover them head h to feet and see them more as sexual objects than anything else. we have come the 100a long way from our primitive past, but religion like Islam pushes us back to it. Unfortunately, people won't listen to reason and logic. ( Islam considers them as hurdles to their path!). The only option left to the world is to fight them and, if possible, bring their numbers down to half of their present population, converting others to civilized ways of living.

A spellbinding and completely riveting read. Tragic on so many levels. One hopes it encapsulates brilliantly a portion of humanity's history that will never be repeated.
