Maintenant je vais répéter ce que j’ai déjà dit et, pour cela, je requiers, à nouveau, votre indulgence. Je n’ai rien à vous cacher Christian Ivanovitch, je suis un homme insignifiant, vous le savez vous-même, mais pour mon bonheur, je ne regrette pas d’être un homme insignifiant. Bien au contraire. Christian Ivanovitch, et pour vous livrer toute ma pensée, je suis même plutôt fier d’être un homme insignifiant. Je ne suis pas un intrigant... et je m’en glorifie également. Je n’agis pas en cachette, mais ouvertement, au grand jour, sans ruser et quoique capable, oui, très capable moi aussi de nuire et sachant à qui je pourrais nuire, je ne veux pas le faire, Christian Ivanovitch, je ne veux pas me salir, je préfère garder les mains propres. Et pourtant, je connais les moyens de nuire... Mais je ne veux pas le faire, Christian Ivanovitch. Je vous l’affirme, au propre comme au figuré, je me lave les mains...
