Charles Dickens, né à Landport, près de Portsmouth, dans le Hampshire, comté de la côte sud de l'Angleterre, le 7 février 1812 et mort à Gad's Hill Place à Higham dans le Kent, le 9 juin 1870, est considéré comme le plus grand romancier de l'époque victorienne.
