When I agreed to receive a random used book to review from Awesome Books, I had no idea that it would be such a fab read! Awesome Books are to be applauded for their efforts to support literacy by giving a book for each one purchased, fighting climate change and, did you know, that each time you buy a used book your carbon footprint is lower by 80%? All good reasons for readers to buy second hand instead of new! There’s always something to discover in this novel; it had my full attention from start to finish! One summer evening, in a suburban area, a hospitable couple decide to have a barbecue and invite both their neighbours and their visiting family. Life will never be the same again . . . Wow. This is an awesome read by an experienced author who knows just how to keep her readers in the palm of her hand. There is an awful lot going on between the covers of this one; a story told both in the then and now. Events on the night of the barbecue are revealed little by little in retrospect while continuing with the day-to-day lives of everyone present but, very cleverly, there is so much happening that I didn’t have a lot of time to dwell on what occurred that evening. Reading this is like watching an intricate dance where something is happening in the centre but the dancers move so quickly and are so light on their feet that you only catch glimpses of the centre and aren’t quite sure what you’re seeing. As with other Liane Moriarty novels, this would transfer to the screen – large or small – terrifically well. She is a writer who really knows her characters and has the ability to get all their charms and idiosyncrasies across on the page. Absolutely superb read, and easily earning all five sparkling stars.
