The beautiful and peaceful heart of the Lake District, Grasmere was an inspiration to both Dorothy and William Wordsworth. Hills, lakes and orchards, letter writing, walks and welcome visitors (including fellow poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge) provoked in Dorothy's journal great, lyrical prose, which in turn influenced her brother's unsurpassed poetry. William and Dorothy Wordsworth (1770-1850 and 1771-1855) were inseparable companions throughout their adult years. After William married, Dorothy continued to live with her brother and his wife. William's major works include the Lyrical Ballads and The Prelude.
