Bertus Aafjes werd in Amsterdam geboren, maar is in de loop van zijn leven Limburger geworden. Lange tijd leefde hij als dichter-kasteelheer op kasteel Hoensbroek. Men kan met recht stellen dat Aafjes het Limburgse land en de Limburgers heeft leren liefhebben, en dat hij er een aantal boeiende stukken over heeft geschreven, die samen de bundel Limburg, dierbaar oord vormen. Het zijn impressionistisch poëtische teksten waarin Aafjes eigen indrukken en ervaringen centraal staan, maar ook beschouwingen over de geschiedenis van Limburg.
