Two stories (80 yrs apart), two narrators, and two timelines, with origins in United States government policies surrounding the treatment of indigenous people and their lands. Add in skeletal remains, lucrative oil leases, accidental death, and murder and there should have been plenty of drama. But overall, the pace felt slow, the story felt long, and picking the book up too often felt like a task.

An interesting story with two timelines-one of runaway children in 1909 Oklahoma and one of a female park ranger in the same area in 1990. The hardships are different but point to the hard won rights to be seen as value to society and work. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lisa Wingate is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Before We Were Yours, which has sold more than three million copies and been translated into over forty languages worldwide. The co-author, with Judy Christie, of the nonfiction book Before and After, Wingate is an Oklahoma Book Award finalist and a Southern Book Prize winner.
