About this eBook

Welcome to Lone County, Arkansas, where every corner holds a secret, and the past is never really buried.

Disgraced ex-detective Harper Adams has traded her badge for a desk job at her father's law firm, a move as dull as the small town she's returned to. But things take a turn when a local woman wants to declare her missing husband dead, five years after his mysterious disappearance.

With her father’s firm representing the missing man's wife, Harper seizes the opportunity to delve back into her investigative roots. Her search leads her back to James Malcolm, a former crime boss turned tavern owner, who has his finger on the pulse of every shadowed corner. His offer to help with her investigation catches her by surprise.

Why would a former criminal offer his help unless he has something to gain?

Well Denise did it again, had me yelling at her and tossing my Kindle after the last page! That’s because I’m so invested in these characters and am impatient for the next book after that hook of an ending. Harper is not your typical heroine. At this point she is a functioning alcoholic and while she does acknowledge to herself that she has a problem, she’s not ready to do anything about it. She is fighting so many inner demons from the past to more recent traumas and events. Denise does a fantastic job of getting you into Harper’s head and feeling what she is going through. This just gives her character so much room to change and grow. I’m excited to be on this journey with her. I love that Harper ends up teaming up with James as she works to solve a 5-year-old cold case of a missing man. Harper struggles with trusting James and struggles some more that she does mostly trust him. I loved getting more James in this book. The mystery is intriguing, kept me guessing and shocked when

I'm going to try and write a spoiler free review but it's going to be hard. We sure did learn a lot with this book. Some of the them we knew from reading the Rose Gardner series. Those who haven't read the Rose Gardner series are sure missing a LOT of context. If I were you, I'd stop now and go read them. You won't be disappointed. This book was a nail biter of a read. Once I got into it, I sure didn't want to let it go. Not for work, nor sleep. I had to tell myself to slow down and not read ahead so I wouldn't miss anything. I love stories like that. There is so much intrigue in the way these stories are written that they are always a delight. I find myself trying to figure things out and see if I come to the same conclusion that the main character does. It's a lot of fun.

Another amazing read in my collection!! The only 2 complaints I have are 1 it ended way tooo soon!! Was extremely quick read! 2. I do not want to wait for the next book!! Loved the name drops of characters from other books! They always make me feel like I know something someone else doesnt!! This is book 2 of the Harper Adam's series. Must read! Couldn't put down!! Recommend to anyone who loves a good mystery, and other fellow DGS fans!. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
