Chief Inspector Armanc Gamache is recovering from injuries on a case that went wrong. He's currently in Quebec City where he's doing research at one of his favorite spots, the Literary and Historical Society.
As he walks his dog, one winter morning, police are investigating a murder. He learns that the victim is Augustin Renaud who was looking for the burial spot of Quebec's founder, Champlain.
Gamache is asked to assist in the investigation and to help keep tensions from arising between the French and English speaking communities.
At the same time, he's recieving letters from Twin Pines where he was instrumental in having his friend Oliver convicted of murder. Oliver's partner doesn't believe that Oliver is guilty so Gamache sends one of his men to reconstruct the investigation.
As the story continues, Gamache has flashbacks about the case that went wrong. We learn that one of his men was abducted and his investigation into what the abductor wanted.
Louise Penny is an excellent writer and in this work she has written a literary novel with a unique plot. Readers will enjoy her story and the history of Quebec that is intermingled within the plot.

All the Inspector Gamanche stories are a pleasure. The characters, the back stories, the language. This one is no exception. If we were better at burying our dead what a different world we would have today.
