About this eBook

The world of dogfighting is an ugly place …

When Tophat, a missing K9 dog, is accidentally sent to Canada as part of a group of rescued dogs looking for adoption, Lucas knows he’s the natural pick for this job. Plus he has another reason to be in the country. His sister lives there, and … so does his ex-fiancée.

But when he arrives, Lucas finds Tophat was handed over to a trainer who deals with aggressive dogs. The news isn’t good, especially after Lucas arrives at the trainer’s property and is thrown into the dark underworld of dogfighting.

Tanya used to share her home with her two best friends, until one was killed in a hit-and-run and the other badly injured. Now living alone in a small apartment, Tanya realizes how much she’s lost—including Lucas. Unexpectedly seeing him flips her world once more …

As Lucas digs deeper into Tophat’s disappearance, the dogfighting ring rises up to protect their own …

This is book 5 in the K9 Files series and it features Lucas and Tanya. In this story Lucas is looking for a military working dog who was mistakenly taken to Canada, with other rescue dogs, to be put up for adoption. Lucas goes to a little town in Alberta where his sister lives as well as Tanya. Tanya is the love of his life and they broke up because he wanted children and she didn’t. There was NO smooth flow to this story line at all. The adventure with TopHat was great. The interaction between Lucas and Tanya was just plain weird. There was ZERO romance. Even the intimate scene towards the end felt too scripted. There was nothing sexy or appealing about either character, which was surprising because this author writes pretty great military romance. I felt more romance between Meg and Nathan, who are minor characters. I am a fan of this author but in my honest opinion, this book was disappointing.

Another lovely story in the K9 series. Dale Mayer has cleverly incorporated old friends from the SEAL of Honour and Heroes for Hire series into this exciting book. Lucas is an ex SEAL who was discharged due to life altering injuries. Because of his connection with Canada (his sister and his ex fiance live there) he is the obvious choice to track down Tophat, an ex military dog who has been dispatched to Canada by mistake. Tanya, his ex fiance joins him on the journey in the hope that they will be able to sort out issues and at least become friends. The gentle romance runs through the book along with dog fighting, murder, bent policemen etc, etc, there is intrigue, twists and turns, red herrings making this a really enjoyable story. I love the way that these ex military dogs are afforded the same respect and care as their human colleagues. This is a standalone book as are the previous books in this series but it gently eases the reader into the next one in the series. I can highly recommend this book if you want a delightful story with some substance. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Lucas by Dale Mayer Lucas (The K9 Files #5) by Dale Mayer (Goodreads Author) Read Tense but gripping story full of danger and risk, Lucas is determined to rescue Top Hat and bring down those who treat dogs in this despicable way. That Tanya steps up beside him is icing on the cake. I understood her reasoning behind not wanting a family but also realised it had got screwed up with the feelings for her mother. There is action and threats from all direction in a suspense filled plot, obviously the people saying this dog was aggressive were not treating him right or he was just very scared by what was happening to him. Loving this fabulous series I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
