About this ebook

Success! A magical word indeed, but what exactly is it? A one-time thing, like hitting a home run, scoring a touchdown, or winning a game? Is it a destination? Or a journey? Is there a fixed, clearly marked place called "Success"? Or does it vary from individual to individual?

Does success mean achievement, or fame, or power, or wealth? Who decides when one has become "successful"? Can it be self-conferred? Is it, like beauty, in the eye of the beholder? Can we objectively define it? Can two people have nearly identical track records and yet one be seen as successful and the other to have failed?

In our research for this book, it became very clear that defining and describing success is no easy task. It is indeed a moving target, as subjective as it is elusive. We hope the quotations about them, and the stories behind each of them, will be a source of inspiration in your journey along the highway to success.

About the author

Mac Anderson is the founder of Simple Truths and Successories, Inc., the leader in designing and marketing products for motivation and recognition. He was also the founder and CEO of McCord Travel, the largest travel company in the Midwest, and part owner/VP of sales and marketing for Orval Kent Food Company, the country's largest manufacturer of prepared salads. His accomplishments in these unrelated industries provide some insight into his passion and leadership skills. He also brings the same passion to his speaking where he gives presentations to many corporate audiences on a variety of topics, including leadership, motivation, and team building. Mac has authored or co-authored twenty-two books that have sold over three million copies.

Bob Kelly began his freelance writing career at age 15, covering high school sports events for The New York Times (at $5 per event). After graduation from college with a degree in Journalism and English, he spent many years as a commercial banker before returning to his first love. In 1979, he founded WordCrafters, Inc., offering a wide range of editorial services, including newsletters, direct mail and ghostwriting. From 1982 to 1988, he was also editor and publisher of The Pasadena Journal of Business and a freelance writer for other business newspapers. During his career, he has authored or co-authored 18 books, including pictorial histories of such well-known communities as Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Pasadena (twice), Santa Monica and Colorado Springs. He has also ghostwritten numerous books on business, financial and professional topics. In 1982, he began building a library of quotations, which now numbers 425 published volumes, many of them dating back to the 19th century. His collection encompasses more than one-and-a-half million selections, perhaps the largest in the English-speaking world. He has edited and compiled several volumes of quotations, including In Celebration of Children; Worth Repeating: More than 5,000 Classic and Contemporary Quotes; and The Tremendous Power of Prayer. The last named, on which he collaborated with the late well-known motivational speaker, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones, received a Silver Angel Award in 2001 from Hollywood-based Excellence in Media. Since 2003, Bob has been writing and publishing a free monthly online newsletter, titled The KellyGram: Wit and Wisdom About the Wonderful and Often Wacky World of Words. Subscription information and back issues are available on his web site: www.wordcrafters.info.
