The resulting trial in January 1857 made the story notorious. After Flaubert's acquittal in February 1857, Madame Bovary was published in book form and became an instant bestseller. The novel is considered Flaubert's master-piece, and one of the most influential literary works in history. The British critic James Wood writes: Flaubert(s)influence is almost too familiar to be visible.

Gustave Flaubert (December 12, 1821 May 8, 1880) was a French novelist who is counted among the greatest Western novelists. He is known especially for his first published novel, Madame Bovary (1857), and for his scrupulous devotion to his art and style, best exemplified by his endless search for "le mot juste" ("the precise word").
