About this ebook

Dos Idiomas, One Me is the story of a young girl who feels torn between two languages. At home, she speaks Spanish, at school, she speaks English, and she finds herself resenting the fact that she has to translate her thoughts and feelings. Then, she realizes that being bilingual is a gift. She begins to have fun navigating the space of inclusivity and starts to relish the role of teacher and translator.

By equally incorporating Spanish and English, Dos Idiomas, One Me promotes biliteracy. As young readers see their experiences reflected in the story of another dual-language speaker, they can feel encouraged to embrace all aspects of themselves.

“A charming book depicting bicultural identity. Maggy Williams takes the reader into the struggle and joy a child experiences while not feeling ni de aquí, ni de allá, and yet from both sides.” – Anel Duarte, artist and poet

“Such a unique, inspiring story that captures the heart within seconds of reading! A powerful, dynamic rendition of what it means to be a bilingual child. Every family should read it!” – Sabrina Suarez, artist, advocate, and community leader

– Irma Erichsen, author and artist

Dos Idiomas, One Me illustriously guides young readers and their grownups towards understanding that differences make us unique and special. Beautifully written!” – AnnaMarie Jones, co-creator of the Demystifying Diversity Podcast.

I grabbed this book for two reasons. First of all, it looked like it would be a cute, fun story about a bilingual young girl struggling with feeling torn between two languages and eventually seeing the benefit of speaking both. Secondly, I have been learning Spanish for a while now and here was a chance to practice reading a bit of it while enjoying a cute story. First, let me tell you that I was so pleased with how well I could read it. The few words I didn't know were easily understood by context. I think this book would be great for either someone learning Spanish or for ESL students. Second, this story is cute with a great ending. I can see it being inspirational to children, especially those that might be struggling with the same issue as the girl in the book. She can speak both languages fluently, but not everyone around her can. She likes both languages but doesn't enjoy the constant switching back and forth between the two depending on who she is speaking to. If you want to see how she overcomes this resentment, be sure to grab a copy for yourself. It is a fun book with a good lesson in it. The pages are bright and colorful. The character's expressions are easy to read, so children of all ages will easily understand how they are feeling as they progress through the story. I definitely recommend this book to everyone, from children to adults, English and Spanish speakers alike. Me gustó mucho el libro y lo recomiendo a todos quiénes son bilingüe o estudian español o inglés. I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

The book tells the story of how a young girl who attends school can speak in both Spanish and English. She finds it difficult because at home she is not allowed to speak English as her parents do not understand, and at school she is not allowed to speak Spanish because her friends do not understand. All she wants is to be known as a little girl and the bright vivid pictures and large text explain how she feels about having to talk different languages in different situations, as well as attracting a young reader to look and study the pictures, inspiring their imaginative side. Her best friend then asks her to teach her some Spanish and from this request she decides not just to teach her friend but her class as well. The whole book shows us how we do not always recognise how inventive children can be on solving their own problems. It can also be used when a child is feeling confused and conflicted about where they stand at home and in the community. An interesting story on how children can work through issues themselves with bright illustrations.

About the author

Maggy Williams started writing at five years old and hasn’t stopped since. She loves creating stories for young readers because they have the best imaginations and because she never wants to grow up. When she’s not writing, she enjoys acting and comedy improv, which is basically just make-believe for grown-ups.
