The Blind Assassin: A Novel

Not quite what I expected from a novel by Atwood that had claimed the Booker Award. Yes, it was beautifully written & intricately plotted. Yet, for some reason difficult to place my finger on it lacked heart. Too abstract, perhaps. Or, could have been too cerebral for my palate. Not one for my collection.

This was the kind of read that slowly builds up to an incredible story. Around the last third of the book I found myself flipping back to the beginning to cross check some points and when I saw what Atwood had been doing the whole time, my mind was blown. I love how she embedded the sci-fi element into this relatively contemporary tale, which in itself is superior to many other things I've read. My favorite read of 2014.

This is the first work I've read of Atwood's. She seems very descriptive, straight forward and kind of simple. Atwood had my attention with the very first sentence, "Ten days after the war ended,my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge." I would love to read more of this book. I wonder why she was so worried about what everyone would think about her family? They must have been from money. I have so many questions from only reading the first couple pages.
